Ukulele Tuition

Rik Roberts offers 1 to 1 lessons in Ukulele at his home teaching studio in Hazel Grove, Stockport or online via Skype/Zoom.
He teaches both chord-based ukulele and chord-melody ukulele.
Chord-Based Ukulele
This is the style we most commonly associate with the instrument, where you strum/fingerpick to accompany singing. It's what most people play in ukulele clubs up and down the country. It may also involve playing a melody whilst someone else plays chords with you, or adding riffs/licks to your chords but it's mostly about accompanying someone else singing or playing a melody part. George Formby falls into this category although there are many other genres of music within it, including Jazz, Blues, Latin, Folk, Country, Pop, Rock etc.
Chord-Melody Ukulele (Solo Ukulele)
This is where you play both accompaniment and a melody at the same time, in a similar way to a pianist or classical guitarist. It's more difficult to learn but it means you don't need to sing! It's a very attractive and impressive approach to ukulele as it's completely self-contained - for this reason it's sometimes called 'Solo Ukulele'. There are quite a few similarities between this style and classical/Spanish guitar. Any genre of music can be incorporated into the style. I demonstrate the chord-melody approach in the two videos at the bottom of this page.
